Is a visit from the Rutgers Science Explorer right for your school?
The
Rutgers Science Explorer program is designed for
students in grades 68, who delve into the
world of science through hands-on experiments with
Rutgers scientists. The bus normally is available
on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays
to visit schools within a radius of 50 to 60 miles of New Brunswick,
although the program will consider requests from more
distant schools. A fee of $200 is charged for a bus
visit to help defray the cost of materials and fuel.
Each activity on the Rutgers Science Explorer lasts for 90 minutes; for most school schedules, there are three to four activity blocks per day. There are 15 minutes between activities for cleanup and prep, and a 30-minute lunch break. Each session can accommodate a maximum of 20 students and their teacher. Schools that cannot accommodate a full grade-level in one day may schedule consecutive days as availability allows, at additional charge.
The Rutgers Science Explorer staff looks forward to working with your school administrators and science teachers to create a meaningful experience for your middle school students. Your teachers will assist Rutgers Science Explorer staff in bringing standards-based, hands-on explorations to your school as part of Rutgers Science Day.

School Explorer Coordinator
Before requesting a Rutgers Science Explorer visit, a science teacher must agree to serve as the School Explorer Coordinator to help arrange and plan the visit; the coordinator must have access to email and the Internet year-round. As your school’s point person for the bus visit, the coordinator is expected to manage the various responsibilities and tasks associated with a visit, such as submitting the visit request form, coordinating experiment sessions, making parking arrangements for the bus, and fielding calls and emails from the Rutgers Science Explorer staff. For details, please see our list of Responsibilities of the School Explorer Coordinator. |
